FOR DISTRICT 3

About Me
Hi – I’m Lance Smith, your candidate for the District 3 City Council seat this November. I have lived in Fort Collins for the last 15 years and in Colorado the last 25 years. Fort Collins is a very special community - with our beautiful downtown, lively local arts and culture, great recreational opportunities and the parks, trails, open spaces , and nature we all enjoy. As a college town, we also benefit from the diversity and curiosity that makes our community even more vibrant. Yet it still has a small-town feel. All of which is why Fort Collins is truly home for my family and me.

Professionally I worked in an investor-owned utility for 10 years before taking a position with our municipal utility where I worked for over 12 years as its finance director. In that role I was responsible for the fiscal management of our essential municipal utility services. This involved working with the City Council and its Finance Committee, our community’s many boards and commissions and directly with citizens. I share the passion and sense of responsibility our community has to provide an environmentally sustainable, resilient future for everyone. It also allowed me to really understand how our city government functions and the importance of our City Council in setting priorities.
I now work in a neighboring community in a similar capacity which allows me the opportunity to ask for your consideration to serve as your District 3 Councilmember.

WHERE I COME FROM
I was born in Texas and grew up in the southwest as one of 4 children of a single mother who provided for all of us as best as she could. I get my strong work ethic and drive to just do the right thing from my mother. We moved often before I graduated high school outside of Houston. From there I joined the Coast Guard Reserves at 17 to help pay for school and went off to college in New Mexico followed by graduate school in Arizona before moving to Fort Collins.
I am the father of two young adult sons and live with my life partner - Mary Beth, her son, my sons and our dog.
